The iconic colour of Cornwall’s Air Ambulance has inspired the name of a new fundraising beer.
Red Mission, an amber-hued ale with chocolate and caramel flavours, has been brewed especially by the Driftwood Spars in St Agnes, with 25p from each bottle and 10p from each pint sold going to the Cornish charity.
Its name was coined by 25-year-old Laura Bosworth from Lanner, who won a county-wide competition to name the beer.
Laura said: “It was a great competition to win because I had to put some real effort in to thinking of a name.
“After researching Cornwall Air Ambulance, I saw the mission counter on the website that said there had been more than 22,000 emergency call outs, plus I knew the colour of the beer was reddish amber. I wrote down a few alternatives, but Red Mission seemed like a good idea.”
Laura’s winning name was announced live on radio and she was presented with a case of 12 beers as first prize. Laura will also get the chance to visit the air ambulance helicopter and paramedics.
The beer has now been launched at the Driftwood Spars, where it will be available through the bar or to buy in bottles. Chief executive of the air ambulance trust, Paula Martin, said: “We had so many fantastic entries but Laura’s really stood out as we fly around 1,000 missions a year and of course the helicopter is red.”
The trust is promoting a message of drinking responsibly over Christmas.
“We developed Red Mission both for its colour and also its low percentage of alcohol. Christmas is a time to enjoy yourself but at the same time we would encourage people to drink safely and responsibly,” added Paula.
