A key road that was due to be closed during Falmouth Week will now remain open thanks to the Packet.

Trescobeas Road, which is one of the main roads into the town centre, had been due to close this Monday so that three weeks of resurfacing work could be carried out.

This would have seen the road, which runs past the town’s fire station and hospital, shut throughout Falmouth Week, when thousands of extra people visit the town to enjoy the sailing regatta and shore-side entertainment.

The news – which was only revealed when a sign went up at the end of the road on Tuesday, less than a week before the planned closure – appalled residents, who described the decision as “ludicrous.”

However, following a phone call from the Packet to town manager Richard Gates, who was not aware of the closure up to that point, this has all changed.

Mr Gates quickly got on the phone to Cornwall Council’s highways department to rectify matters.

Work has now been delayed until Monday, August 15 but is still expected to be completed on the date planned, ahead of the start of the new school year.

Mr Gates said that in order to achieve this, the workforce was being doubled.

He described the delayed closure as “great” news, having previously spoken about not wanting the closure to impact on the traffic in that area.
