THE fight to reveal the names of Cornwall councillors who have faced legal action over unpaid council tax bills is continuing.

As reported in the Packet last week, a freedom of information request to Cornwall Council has revealed that legal action has been taken four times since 2009 to recover the unpaid debts of councillors.

However, despite requests from the Packet, no further details have been revealed by Cornwall Council, which has cited data protection laws to prevent it naming the members involved.

An appeal against that decision has been lodged, but a ruling is not expected for several weeks.

The Packet has emailed each councillor individually to ask if they have had legal action taken against them. Out of 121 serving councillors, 48 have responded to say no and are listed below.

Readers of our website thepacket.co.uk have been calling for the councillors to be named.

Adam, from St Austell, wrote: “The councillors who have responded to the request for confirmation have done the right thing by the Cornish people, even when there is an admission that they made a mistake in the past. It is those councillors who refuse to take part in this discussion who cast suspicion on those innocent councillors who have yet to reply, and who help reduce trust and confidence in the council as a body. Name and shame them!”

Another anonymous poster added: “Councillors who refuse to pay, or fail to pay, their council tax on time are showing that their fitness to hold public office is very doubtful.Councillors set the tax and impose it upon the rest of us. It is hypocrisy of the worst kind on the part of any councillor who does not pay it, for any reason. Any councillor who has been pursued in a court action should not only pay the overdue tax and court costs, but also the cost to the council (ie the taxpayers) of pursuing the case against him or her.”
