An inspector has called on the Meudon Hotel near Mawnan Smith – and she has demanded a revamp.

The Meudon is to appear on the Channel 5 series The Hotel Inspector, which follows hotelier Alex Polizzi around the country helping refurbish and re-launch hotels.

Ms Polizzi comes from a dynasty of hotel owners, with Lord Forte – who founded the Forte Group – her grandfather while her mother is Olga Polizzi, owner of the Tresanton on St Mawes among others.

The hotel was contacted by a researcher from the programme, who was briefed with finding a country house hotel in Cornwall – and Meudon fitted the bill.

The production company is keeping the details of what happens at the Meudon under wraps, including the three point plan that Ms Polizzi gives to owner Mark Pilgrim explaining how to improve.

However, the Packet can reveal that two bedrooms will be redecorated as part of the episode.

One will be done by Ms Polizzi and the other by owner Mark Pilgrim, who is the fifth generation of hoteliers in his family. The pair are keeping their plans secret from each other and will be revealing the rooms as part of the show.

Mr Pilgrim is investing £10,000 as part of the programme and is using Oliver & Son of Helston to supply the materials for the refurbishment.

Other plans for the hotel include redecorating the Bridge Lounge, a seating area overlooking the hotel’s 8.5 acre sub-tropical gardens that were laid out by the Fox family, who also created Trebah Gardens, and go down to the hotel’s private beach Bream Cove.

This seating area may be renamed the Bridge Deck to reflect the new ‘luxury yacht’ feel that is being planned.

The restaurant will be the next big project and Mr Pilgrim’s aim is to then continue with the redecoration room by room until the whole hotel has been completed, in around 18 months to two years’ time.

His hope is to extend its clientele from ‘retired and beyond’ to aged 55 plus, as well as welcome families. As a country house hotel, the Meudon also welcomes dogs, with rooms specifically set aside for owners – complete with dog beds and treats.

Mr Pilgrim, who has been joined by his sister Gaye Woods for the process, said: “At the end of the day we’re not going to detract from being a country house hotel. That’s what we are and will continue to be.”

One ambition is to become “less formal and more relaxed” – beginning with no dress code for dining.

“While we will continue to do things properly and be led by quality, we are here and welcoming to all,” said Mr Pilgrim, who added: “I don’t think we’re going to become uber chic and boutique. We are going to offer a modern approach. We have got one foot in the past, but with an eye to the future.

“We want to be accessible and we want to be contemporary in terms of food, style and fashion in what is a country house hotel in a most unique and wonderful setting. Why would we change that?”

The Meudon episode of The Hotel Inspector is currently due to air in August.
