A Cornish hotel went the extra mile after a visit from G7 delegates attending the Leaders Summit.

The Headland Hotel in Newquay provided an extra special welcome for international delegates attending the G7 Summit at the weekend.

Officials from Japan and Korea were able to communicate in their own language at The Headland, after staff received training on language and culture for both countries.

The delegates were attending the summit held in Carbis Bay, which saw leaders from the UK, France, Canada, America, Germany, Italy and Japan take part in a three-day conference.

Hotel Director Veryan Palmer, said: "We always try our very best to make all our guests feel at home and, in the run up to the G7, more than 55 staff members at the hotel have been learning about Korean and Japanese culture and they have absolutely loved it.

"Truro College has been fantastic, with their tutors delivering two four-hour sessions plus ongoing support.

"The delegates from both countries were so grateful for the effort made to make them feel welcome during their stay with us.

"It was great for staff to be able to greet guests in their own language; we recognise the importance of training our staff in skills other than those directly needed for their roles, for team development and individual wellbeing."

The Japanese lessons were delivered by Hilary Frank, the former chairman of Cornwall Council.

She has had a strong affinity with the country for many years, having worked there as an interpreter during the 2019 rugby World Cup and the 1998 Olympics.

During her time there, Hilary met her future husband Shojiro, who helped her to teach hotel staff the bowing tradition so integral to Japanese culture.

Hilary said: "The Headland staff were so receptive to it.

"They already possessed top notch service skills so Shojiro and I were able to adapt that for the Japanese delegates."
