GALLERY 49 in High Street, Falmouth is currently showing the work of Julian Christophers, a prolific local artist.

Julian has been creating works for more than 25 years and has produced well in excess of 2,000 images. He lives and works in Penryn and is perhaps best known for his series of pictures featuring trawlers from Newlyn, Falmouth and Fowey.

These trawlers occupy much of the space in the current |exhibition, plus there are two new pictures of Falmouth buildings: The previous Post Office Building on the Moor, plus the Municipal Buildings and Library.

One look at the pictures demonstrates to the viewer just how much work, along with a considerable humour, goes into the making of his paintings. These are mixed media pictures with personality and an almost three-dimensional aspect in the layering of the |surfaces for added depth.

There is also a new| ‘personalities’ montage piece in the show. It’s a collection of |mini-portraits of the artist’s friends alongside faces from the media. This work is linked closely with the large ‘multi-portrait’ piece currently on display at Falmouth Town Gallery (until September 14) but with a|different cast of contributors.

One of the hardest-working artists in the West Country, this always-interesting painter works consistently within the Cornish naïve tradition.

The exhibition runs until September 14, the gallery is open from 1.30pm to 5.30pm on Tuesday, and Thursday to Saturday.
