The CAST building in Helston is reopening its cafe, screening space and family activities, including a new activity trail.

Situated in the old school building at 3 Penrose Road, Helston, CAST will be open from Tuesday, August 4.

The café will be open daily, 10am to 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and the same hours apply for CAST activities.

In the black box screening space CAST is presenting a programme of quietly humorous short films by the renowned artist film-maker John Smith. The programme runs for an hour and you can drop in at any time. Admission is free and booking is not required.

A programme of 'think and make' activities for families, CAST-Off, will also be running throughout August.

In response to social distancing requirements, CAST is taking its activities programme out of doors this year, to explore the wonderful valley of the River Cober, following a trail from Lowertown through Helston to Loe Bar, with an activity map suggesting lots of creative and imaginative things to do along the way. It’s a long trail so you can do it in your own time and in sections.

The trail is divided into eight sections and covers different environments, including riverbank, woodland, park, boating lake, meadow, marsh, walled garden and shingle bar. Those that take part will be 'looking back in time at the geography, topography and wildlife of this special valley, to build a detailed picture of a place like no other'.

You can use the activity map to do things as a family in your own time. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, artists will pop up at different outdoor locations to inspire invention and making.

Activities include painting and drawing using natural pigments and dyes, drawing with home-made charcoal and found materials, making boats, kites, woodland creatures and seed bombs.

At the end of the month, there will be prizes made up of real artist’s materials for the most creative and imaginative sketch books.

To find out what is going on and where, check the CAST website: https://c-a-s-t.org.uk, or CAST Cornwall Facebook page each week.

CAST is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Tuesday and Saturday sessions will run from 10 am to 12 noon and 2 to 4pm.
