ONCE again Falmouth Golf Clubs Wills Salver & Corrnish Bowl sides were in action on the same day at two different venues, writes Phil Jones.

The Frank Wills side played at Perranporth GC whilst the Cornish Bowl side played up the road at Newquay GC. Both teams were playing two very experienced sides from West Cornwall Golf Club.

The Franks Wills side teed off at 11:30am and were led out, as usual, by Ben Browning and Steve Robbins giving three shots and making steady progress, and were two up after nine holes. Falmouth’s second pairing of Harry Drewett and Archie Fox giving six shots were quicker out of the blocks, and they were three up after eight holes.

Ash Bennett and Dave Blizzard gave four shots then followed, and they were involved in a much tighter match which was all square after 10 holes. Luke Geach and Callum Davis were fourth out giving four shots also had a game on their hands with their match All Square through nine.

Last off were Falmouth’s Matt Morrison and Will Sercombe giving seven shots who made a cracking start and were four up with four holes to play. Browning and Robbins brought home the first point for Falmouth winning their match two and one and were closely followed in by Drewett and Fox winning their match three and two. This left Falmouth only needing one more point to progress into the Final for the second year running.

That point came from Geach and Davis who won on the 15th hole three and one sending Falmouth into the final. The remaining two games went down to the wire with Bennett and Blizzard winning on the 19th hole and, after being four up with four to play, Morrison and Sercombe finally managed to close out their match, winning on the 18th and keeping their 100% record.

The final result was Falmouth Golf Club 5 West Cornwall GC 0. Falmouth will now have the opportunity to defend their title against Truro Golf Club at St Enodoc Golf Club on Sunday, March 3.

The Cornish Bowl side had a slightly earlier tee off of 10.30 at Newquay Golf Club playing against the current holders West Cornwall GC who beat Falmouth in last year's final at Bude. With Falmouth’s most successful bowl pairing of Andy Parry and Mike Davies missing Captain Pete Lewis was forced to make a couple of changes to the team. Left Hander Glenn Fortune was brought in to pair with Chris Pellow and Falmouth Vice Captain Phil Jones was paired up with Darren Horton.

Bert Coulls and Steve Briers got Falmouth underway and they were in fine form going three up after 12 holes made all the more impressive as they had to give two shots to the opposition. Adam Copper and Ronnie May followed also giving two shots were finding it tough going and were two down through 14. Next off were Chris Pellow and Bowl debutant Glenn Fortune and what a start for Pellow and Fortune who went five up through the first eight holes.

Falmouth’s fourth pairing Tom and Adam Pryor once again had some work to do after going three down but by the time the pairing had got to the 15th the brothers had turned the game on its head and were one up with three to play. Last off were Darren Horton and Phil Jones, giving three shots they made a good start on the first hole going one up with Horton almost converting his put for a birdie.

It was Coulls and Briers that put Falmouth’s first point on the board with a comfortable three and two win which was followed by Pellow and Fortune convincingly winning their match seven and five helped by a superb performance by the lefthander. With Cooper and May losing their match three and two it came down to the last two pairings.

Horton & Jones were involved in a tight match with the game going down 17th with the pair being one up but having to give a shot. Fortunately for Falmouth, the Pryors holed out on 17 winning their match three and one and sending Falmouth into the final for the second year in a row. With the match decided, Horton and Jones shook hands on 17 for a well-deserved half.

Falmouth’s Bowl side will now play Whitsand Bay Golf Club at St Enodoc Golf Club on Sunday, March 3.
