Enforcement agents have been ordered to chase up a driver who racked up £6,620 worth of parking fines in a single year.

Details issued by Wolverhampton City Council after a Freedom of Information request by the city’s Liberal Democrat branch showed one vehicle was slapped with 136 penalty charges in the 2016/17 financial year.

The majority of the tickets, none of which have been paid, were handed out on the Whitmore Street car park.

Council officials have declined to confirm the make and model of the vehicle involved, citing data protection laws, but have said it is registered in the UK.

Urging the Labour-run council to “get a grip” and chase up the money owed, Lib Dem campaigner Rob Quarmby said: “The idea that someone owes the council over six grand is shocking.

“This person needs to pay up what they owe.”

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment at the council, said: “We have identified the owner of the vehicle and enforcement agents have been instructed to recover all outstanding debt on behalf of the council.

“Penalty Charge Notices are issued to motorists who park in contravention; as a result of overstaying their paid-for time while parked in an on or off-street pay and display bay, or having not paid for parking in the first place.

“The council will continue to pursue inconsiderate drivers who park in contravention and choose to ignore legal notices.”
