A giant artwork from graffiti artist Banksy’s Dismaland exhibition is to go on display in the town where the pop-up “bemusement park” was held.

The seven-metre high pinwheel will be exhibited in Weston-super-Mare’s High Street this summer.

The pinwheel was donated by the elusive artist after the Dismaland show, which was set up at the derelict Tropicana seafront lido in 2015, closed.

Since then it has been kept in storage but North Somerset Council has revealed it will be refurbished and go on display in the town’s Italian Gardens.

The project received a £50,000 grant from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund.

A council spokeswoman said: “The pinwheel will be moved to its new home over the next few months in time for the summer season.

“It will join a host of works within the town centre including public realm improvements taking place on South Parade and a future bus interchange at Alexandra Parade.

“The Italian Gardens and the Heritage Action Zone are part of the Weston Town Centre Regeneration Programme which is delivering improvements to key sites within the town and encouraging inward investment.”

The Tropicana outdoor pool and leisure facility closed in 2000 due to falling visitor numbers.

There have been various attempts to reopen or demolish the structure.

Banksy, who is thought to hail from Bristol, said he had been motivated to work on the site because he “loved” the Tropicana as a child.

Dismaland featured migrant boats, Jimmy Savile, a fire-ravaged fairytale Cinderella Castle and an anarchist training camp.

The artist described the park as “a festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism”, adding: “This is an art show for the 99% who’d rather be at Alton Towers.”

Banksy hand picked the artists in the show, who come from across the world including Israel, Palestine, Syria, the US and the UK.
