LAST weekend saw Cornwall send two shinty teams over 1,000 miles to join the largest senior Shinty 6s Tournament of recent years.

Cornwall Shinty Club and Camborne School of Mines (CSM) were amongst 32 teams massing in Glasgow at the Jack Asher Memorial 6s, including mixed teams, young and old, from The Outer Hebrides to Cornwall.

Whilst the Pasties are renowned for travelling, the solitary Cornish goal in last year's tournament arguably didn’t quite have them heading north as favourites.

With two hours of sleep breaking the journey, the Pasties cunningly arrived on the minute for registration, replaced warm-ups with catch-ups, and set about creating something of a shocker.

CSM beat Tayforth Camanachd and racked up a couple of impressive draws with a stand-out performance from birthday girl Molly Shaw in the nets, captaining CSM for the first time.

Cornwall Shinty Club were a bit sloppy off the bus, losing to Stirling University 0-2, warmed up with a great performance to draw with a strong Dundee University team 0-0, then beat Edinburgh University 4-0, Glasgow University 1-0 and most impressively Strathclyde University 2-1 in a historic first encounter.

Bute 0-3 and Lewis 0-2 proved a bit too much for the team, but it was far from one-way traffic with Prince Ali in fine form at full centre.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Shinty Club said: "Massive well done to all of our amazing players, and a huge thank you to Finn M’Coul’s and Abbott Risk Consulting for their fantastic support of the Cornish and ESA sides, as well as to our hosts in Glasgow."
