The last full day of the Bond Timber Cornwall League ended as the season began – in the wet!
The first three weekends of the season were decimated by the exceptionally wet spring and September didn’t do local cricketers any favours either, as persistent rain set in from the south mid-afternoon to leave the majority of games abandoned.
There were the odd exceptions notably at Falmouth where the County DivisionOne title was decided.
Beacon started the final day knowing Grampound Road had to better their points with the clubs tied but Beacon won the head-to-heads by a point.
With the weather forecast in mind, Falmouth and Roche both agreed to earlier starts in the two key games. It proved dividends for Beacon who bowled Falmouth out for 61.
With the clouds lowering Beacon knocked off the runs in quick time and with maximum points in the bag were able to celebrate only their second County title since the League was reformatted in 1990. Beacon won it in 1993 and there were members of that squad present on Saturday.
Grampound Road were also able to force a home victory over Roche who batted the 50 overs to make 152-7.
Falmouth’s good end-of-season run had already ensured their safety and finished in seventh but a comfortable 39 points ahead of the drop zone in the final reckoning.
For Mullion it was not such good news but there was some end-of-season cheer in the final game at Penzance Seconds. The home side have been out of their depth and not won a game. Mullion racked up 326-3 with skipper Jonty Wheatley making 175 not out. Michael Blanks made 62 in an opening stand of 111. James Dark hit 49 in a third-wicket stand of 167. Penzance were 39-2 off nine overs when rain ended their season.
Final County 1 standings: Beacon 352, Grampound Road 350, Hayle 300, Paul 271, St Erme 263. Newquay 258, Falmouth 254, Roche 229, Mullion 215, Wadebridge II 189, Camborne II 188, Penzance II 89.
In the Premier Division, it was probably just as well there was nothing at stake as all five games were abandoned. Overall of the 90 Premier Division fixtures 19 have either been abandoned or cancelled on top of losing the four weeks of the Premier T20 Cup. Helston were dismissed for 147 at St Austell with Karl Leathley top-scoring with 40. Steve Jenkin made 26 and Billy Taylor 23. The home side were 70-1 when play was called off.
Final Premier standings: Penzance 270, Callington 240, Wadebridge 210, St Austell 207, Redruth 199, Werrington 197, Truro 195, St Just 192, Helston 176, Camborne 154 In Division 2 only one game was completed with Constantine racing to a ten-wicket win over bottom side Hayle Seconds after bowing them out for 30 at Boulder Parc. They finished in fourth. Perranarworthal made 148-9 at Stithians before the rain came. Stithians finished second, fifty points behind champions Perranporth.
One of the stories of the final day was Wendron clinching the Division Three title. They needed a favour from Perranporth seconds and got it as leaders Gulval were defeated by five wickets. Wendron won at Paul by nine wickets with Craig Owens taking 5-16. They play Luckett in the County Final at St Gluvias on Saturday. St Gluvias ended in tenth after a final day abandonment at Camborne.
Helston Thirds also have a County Final to end the season. They take on Gorran at Mount Hawke & Porthowan. Ironically the venue where an abandonment on Saturday meant they edged out Troon by one point on the head to heads. Mount Hawke needed 22 to win with three wickets remaining. Troon made 213-4 against Falmouth Thirds but rain denied them the title.
