St Mary's under-16 gig rowers from the Isles of Scilly were crowned the overall winners at the Junior International Championships in Plymouth.

The event, held on Saturday, October 12, saw 174 young rowers competing.

This was a new competition, allowing rowers of all ages and categories up to 16 to compete against each other for the first time.

It was supported by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and took place at the Mountbatten Watersports & Activities Centre in Plymouth.

Gigs are 32-foot-long traditionally built open wooden boats, rowed by six crew and steered by a coxswain.

The sport has grown enormously since its revival in the 1980s, with 8,000 rowers in 90 clubs across the UK, and more in Europe and America.

Participating clubs in the Junior International were Rame, Portishead, Tamar & Navy, Fowey, Dart, Devoran, Barnstaple, St Mary's, Yealm, Boscastle and Crackington, Brixham, Lyme Regis, Cadgwith, Pendeen, Mounts Bay, and Hayle.
