Ladies professional golfer Katie Rule, who lives in Falmouth and plays out of the prestigious St. Enodoc golf club near Padstow, is on the brink of qualifying for the Ricoh British Ladies’ Open at St Andrews next month writes Keith Rashleigh.

The 20 year-old played in a recent qualifying held at The Berkshire and saw off stiff competition to claim one of the 25 available places.

The field was made up of players from all over the world from the UK, including the UK, Europe, and even some from Australia, China, and New Zealand.

After a bumpy start Katie found herself at three over par after only two holes, but she dug in and battled back.

Throughout the next 14 holes Katie had five birdies and nine pars, leaving her two under par.

A bogey at 17 and a solid par at the 18th left her with a one under par 71 - especially impressive given that the course was set up from the men's white tees.

Katie was one of only seven English golfers to qualify, with the rest made up from international players. The winner by two shots with a round of 66 was from Australia.

The final pre-qualifying event is at Kings Barn Golf Links, on Monday July 29, with the Open starting a few days later.

Katie and her dad - who acts as her caddie - travel to South Hertfordshire Golf Club on Wednesday for the next WPGA competition.

This is in addition to her successes earlier in the year, where at Honiton Katie qualified through to the West Region Powerade National Assistants Championship - open to both Men and Women - with a superb gross 72.

She was the only female from the region to qualify for the final, which is held in Coventry on Wednesday, August 7.

Katie currently lies fourth in the WPGA tour, has been invited to play in a ladies tour event in September.
