CALLINGTON 3

PENRYN 2

This was a tricky, and ultimately disappointing start for Penryn, who were beaten away at Callington in the first game of the new division one west season.

Steve Jewell and Stuart Massey had several absences to contend with, leaving the team short on numbers, but despite this Penryn looked odds on to take all three points until Callington nicked a late winner.

In constant driving rain Penryn got off to the perfect start when Dale Band put Tyler Cooke through on the left.

Cooke raced to the byline and his low, driven cross was met by Kayne Trevaskis, who lifted it high into Stever Parker's net with 13 minutes on the clock.

But Penryn's lead was not to last. Callington equalised on 32 minutes as Sam Stevens similarly converted a cross from Brad Farnham.

Penryn's lack of options on the bench meant Jewell and Massey had little opportunity to mix things up, and this began to tell as the game wore on.

But on 62 minutes they got what looked like a match-winning boost when midfielder Sean Johnson sent over a deep free kick into the path of Trevasksis who timed his run perfectly to help it into the net off his thigh.

Callington applied pressure, and keeper Chris Symons was under constant threat, but time and again he kept Penryn in the game with some timely stops.

Penryn's only sub, Ollie Moody, replaced Tyler cooke on 70 minutes as Penryn with the finishing post in sight, but fate played its hand with ten minutes to go as referee Mick Mills changed his mind after awarding a goal kick, and instead gave Callington a corner.

Penryn looked to have dealt with it, but a partial clearance out to the edge of the box was met by Kirk Smith, who hit a low shot through a crowd of players and in to the bottom right-hand corner.

Even then, a draw looked on the cards. But victory was handed to the home side when Penryn were caught in possession in a dangerous position, and the ball was intercepted by Kirk Smith, who raced clear to thump the winner past a helpless Symons from six yards out.

The game was also delayed for 15 minutes because the ref was late arriving.
