Porthleven have now lost two on the bounce after failing to get revenge over high-flying Mousehole for their narrow defeat earlier this season.

The Fishermen were edged out 3-2, but Wayne Quinn's side were made to work for all three points right up until the final whistle.

The game was notable for two bizarre goals - one for either side - and controversy surrounding a Porthleven 'goal' the home side felt should have stood, but was ruled out because the ball was adjudged not to have gone over the line.

On such decision games are won and lost, and for Mousehole victory takes them to within four points of league leaders Sticker, who have two games in hand at the top of division one west.

Both sides started brightly, with Dan Tarrant needing to be alert in the opening stages to head away a Nick Pugliese corner for Mousehole.

But after ten minutes Mousehole went ahead when Owen Barrett's cross was headed back into the area by Steve Burt, and Wayne Brown was on hand to nod in the opener.

A minute later Mousehole were two up when Barrett's storming run into the box saw him hammer a shot at goal that hit a Port defender, looped into the air and somehow crept in underneath Dennis Annear's crossbar.

On the half hour mark Port thought they'd pulled a goal back when Jordan Annear broke clear of the Mousehole back line and slipped a shot under the keeper, only for Mousehole defender Matt Laity to scramble back and clear off the line.

Port appealed for a goal after the ball looked to have comfortably crossed the line, but the referee waved away their protests and the score remained 2-0 at the break.

Two minutes in to the second half Port were handed a lifeline when youngster Sam Kay turned Quinn in the box and the veteran defender brought him down.

Tom Annear stepped up to plant his spot kick into the back of the net.

And Port spurned a decent chance to draw level soon after when Jordan Annear's run down the right resulted in a ball played in to the feet of Freddie Williams, who hesistated a moment too long before taking a shot, allowing a Mousehole defender to get a block in.

The third Mousehole goal looked to have sealed the win, with Pugliese steering a header past Dennis Annear from Brown's cross.

But Port never gave up, and they pulled another one back in bizarre circumstances.

An innocuous Porthleven throw-in on the right hand side delivered deep into the box saw Quinn inexpilcably catch the ball, and after a moment's confusion the referee once again pointed to the spot.

Up stepped Tom Annear to tuck away his second penalty of the game.

Sensing that a point was within their grasp Port poured forward looking for an equaliser, and Liam Hunter narrowly failed to connect with a dangerous ball into the box from Thomas Hawkins.

But as the clock ticked down Mousehole were able to keep hold of the ball and wait out the whistle to claim their seventh win of the season.
