THE final top positions in the West Cornwall Table Tennis League Premier Division was more than likely resolved when top teams Falmouth Docks A met St Ives A, writes Brian Nicholls.
Docks won by a comfortable 8-2 margin and have opened what is probably an unassailable 10 points with two more matches to play.
St Ives' only success was thanks to John Bassett overcoming Martin Rule and a stunning performance by Mathew Trevorrow to win a four game set against Jeremy Williams.
Despite the setback of having nine points deducted for a players' registration irregularity the team of Jeremy Williams, Adrian Noott and Martin Rule are within a whisker of clinching the title.
Another top table clash in division 1 between St Austell B and Forest Green resulted in a 6-4 victory for home team St Austell. The points difference is just nine, but Forest Green have to yet play Harris Mill A and St Ives B, both formidable opposition.
Meanwhile, St Austell have also to play St Ives B and bottom placed Penpol. Fielding their strongest side Peoples Palace D won a fine 8-2 victory over experienced Harris Mill A. Five sets went to five games and four sets to four games.
The only singles success for Mill was a surprisingly easy victory for a Anthony Solway over Andy Cooper.
