MAREK Churcher has described being brought into Redruth's coaching set-up for their 2015/16 campaign as a "privilege".

After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed on Monday the 32-year-old would be leaving Penryn and joining up with the National League Two South outfit as their backs coach.

He will work under Steve Larkins, who will continue to head up the coaching duties, while Cornish Pirates hooker Rob Elloway will team up with Adrian Rutter to look after the club's forwards.

Churcher, who is also part of the coaching set-up at the Exeter Chiefs' academy, spent last season at the Memorial Ground as Russell Lawrance's assistant, with the club finishing 11th in the Western Counties West under their leadership.

As reported first by the Packet on April 11, Lawrance stood aside from the Borough head coach role due to work commitments in London getting in the way.

Speaking about his new role, Churcher said he is very excited to be given the opportunity to work at The Rec.

Churcher said: "It’s a privilege to be asked to coach at Redruth and I am really looking forward to getting stuck in.

"I am looking forward to the challenges along the way and hopefully my coaching will help contribute towards a successful season.

"The squad is full of young, and some older, talent and for me it’s about empowering these individuals and developing their understanding to help them become better players than they are already."

Last season Redruth finished ninth in the league, one place above county rivals the Cornish All Blacks.

Larkins said he is hoping to build on this during the 2015/16 campaign with a number of young players now gaining more experience, adding he is delighted to have Churcher onboard.

"This year we have put together an exciting coaching team," he said.

"With Rob Elloway and Adrian Rutter in charge of the forwards and with new addition Marek Churcher joining us, we are looking to push on from last year.

"We have some very talented young players who gained a great deal of experience from last year and that exposure to national league rugby will prove invaluable for the 2015/16 season.

"Redruth have a very proud rugby history and I’m sure with the squad being assembled it will prove to be an exciting and successful year."

The Reds will start the season on September 5, with fixtures to be confirmed soon.
