ALAN Thomas got his and Mullion’s season off to a fantastic start on Saturday as he bagged a hat-trick, writes Jane Lugg.
The striker got all the goals for the defending Jolly’s Combination League champions in their opening day fixture at home to newly promoted Holman Sports Club.
Inside the first ten seconds, the visitors came close to breaking the deadlock when Jack Stocker sent a shot just wide of the home goal.
Mullion responded to this five minutes later by opening the scoring as Rob Carey’s cross from the right found Thomas, who flicked a header into the net.
These two combined again to nearly make it 2-0, but Holman goalkeeper Ryan Stephens produced a fine save to deny them.
Chances were being made at both ends as the sides played attacking football with Chris Blee going close for the hosts with a bicycle kick, but the half time score remained 1-0.
After the break, Holmans dominated possession for the first 20 minutes, but Mullion always looked dangerous on the break.
Carey threaded a ball through to Lee Cattran who then saw his effort scrape the post and on another counter attack, Sean Haskill-Mills cut in from the left and sent a left footed drive wide.
Stephens was called on again as he made a fantastic fingertip save to prevent a Jacob Lugg shot going in, but he could not do anything about Thomas’ second goal as the forward slotted the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
Holmans pushed up searching for a way back in but found Jordan Lugg in excellent form between the sticks.
The results was ensured five minutes from time when another Carey cross was headed home by Thomas.
