FOUR years ago Mark Lewarne was driving Formula 1 star Jenson Button around Dubai in a Kia Picanto.

"Put your foot down," said the 2009 World Champion.

"I can't, it won't go any faster," came Mark's reply. "If you don't like it, I'll drop you off in the desert and you can walk back."

Button was in the Middle East receiving triathlon coaching from Mark, who enjoyed his six months in warmer climes, as well as the company of "regular guy" Button.

The 30 year old has his sights set on the European Championships in Lisbon, in May and says that he is in great shape.

"I have stepped up markedly on last year’s efforts. Training has been going really well and I am back to my old self from years ago, it’s just about being consistent and staying injury free.

"Two weeks in the Canary Islands at the end of March will provide an excellent base for the coming season leading onto the European Championships and then on to the summer racing circuit around Europe. I couldn’t be happier with the way things are going."

Mark has been boosted by a sponsorship deal he has secured with Julian Chenoweth, of Maen Karne, the aggregates supplier. Mark's commitment to his sport is not only physical, but also financial.

The World Championships are in Mexico later this year, but he is unsure if he will be able to afford to go.

However, he does hope to compete in the Hungarian National Championships in Budapest, after finishing fifth in a field of more than 100 competitors last year.

"I managed to borrow Dave Bartlett's (another Cornish triathlete) bike for that event and it really helped. The cycle costs £8,000 and it certainly saved me a few seconds here and there."

Mark will represent Team GB in Lisbon, after he has competed in a "prep" race beforehand. He will then race domestically in June, before a potential return to Budapest.

He added: "I’ve missed the boat for any plans to head back to Dubai and Abu Dhabi to race following my victory there in 2013. There are plenty of options, it’s just about finding the right race for me."
