Carmarthen Park, the home of Carmarthen Quins, is the venue when the Cornish Pirates resume their 2017/18 British & Irish Cup campaign with a Round 3 fixture away to Scarlets Premiership Select on Sunday, kick-off at 2.30pm, writes Phil Westren.

Competing this year in Pool 5, the Pirates will be keen to seek another victory, having already won their opening two games in the competition away to Hartpury RFC (35-19) and home to Ulster A (23-14).

Club captain Chris Morgan returns from injury to lead a side that also sees a welcome return, following a 12 month lay off, of wing Matt Evans.

Dual-registered with Exeter Chiefs, centre Harry Strong is selected to make his first competitive match start for the Pirates, whilst similarly dual-registered colleague Harrison Cully is named on a bench that also includes player coach Alan Paver.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to Wales, Cornish Pirates coach Alan Paver said: “We don’t know too much about them, other than realising that they will be a decent side who like to play a bit.

“In a way it’s rather nice not to have all that mental pressure of checking and planning to the nth degree, leaving us to focus on the things that we need to consider, as ultimately it is just about how we perform in an effort show the best of ourselves on that Carmarthen Park pitch.

“We’ve always enjoyed being in the Cup, because going to new grounds and meeting new supporters is always refreshing.

"The competition can also be viewed as a launch pad, to ignite a season, which has been the case for us this year, with our ultimate aim to be again involved in the latter stages.

“Certain players have been rested this week, but at the same time we are taking it seriously and have named a strong Pirates side ready to take to the field.”
