Falmouth 16, Wadebridge 26

ON A day in which the other three quarter-finals were conceded, the Eagles and Camels produced a hard-fought Cornwall Cup contest at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.

Falmouth will feel aggrieved that they did not reach the semi-finals after putting their Western Counties counterparts under real pressure before conceding a late try.

Trailing by three points with a quarter of an hour to go, they carved out a two-man overlap but the ball was agonisingly knocked on down the flank and their chance to assume the lead had gone.

Dom Hawkey scored the visitors’ opening try after good work by flanker Ben Humber, before Justyn Irons and Danny Thomas traded penalties to leave the Camels 8-3 in front.

Ashley Searle levelled the scores when he was driven over after excellent forward pressure, but Toby Armstrong’s score plus two Thomas penalties put Wadebridge 19-8 ahead.

Falmouth were not done though and back row Simon Bailey crossed to reduce the deficit, with an Irons penalty then bringing the gap back to just three.

The Eagles then fluffed their lines when they broke down the wing and late on the Camels secured their place in the last four with a Matt Ballard try, with Thomas adding the extras.

St Ives, St Austell and Cornish All Blacks complete the semi-final line-up.

Falmouth: B Cock, A Geach, A Searle, J Baglow, J Dobson, O Andrews, S Bailey, T Tonkins; M Austin, J Irons (capt), T Edmonds, M Poole, M Lea, T Job, D Goodwin. Reps: H Page, D Hubble, S Firth, A Bullock.

Falmouth return to Western Counties action when they visit Torquay on Saturday.
