Burnham-on-Sea 12, Falmouth 38

Falmouth made the long trip to Burnham-on-Sea fully worthwhile with a bonus point victory, which leaves the Somerset side adrift at the foot of the table, while Falmouth lift themselves from the relegation zone in a fascinating Western Counties West league.

Eagles Coach Graham Whitmore warned his team that with conditions likely to deteriorate it was vital that they started strongly and didn't find themselves having to chase the game.

He couldn't have wished for better as his Falmouth team racked up five unanswered tries to effectively bury the game by half time.

AJ Geach opened the scoring with a catch a drive after Burnham conceded a penalty and lost their full back to the sin bin for a shoulder barge. Tom Edmonds at fly half adding the extras.

Number 8, Tom Simmons featured strongly in the next pair of tries, firstly while steering a maul, he spotted a gap on the blind side and ran unopposed to score, Edmonds converting, then after a turnover, Simmons broke upfield and demonstrating great vision floated a wide pass to Matt Poole, in support to score.

Burnham, after half an hour began in desperation to try and break Falmouth and suffered when Dom Goodwin pounced on a stray pass to intercept and secure the bonus point, Edmonds again converting.

A wrist injury saw second row James Dobson replaced by Trevelyan Ward, who made his mark with a series of steals at the line out. The hosts were further punished when scrum half, Tom Spiller hoisted a box kick which was completely missed by the Burnham wing, Tom Edmonds kicked ahead the loose ball before Tom Job got the decisive touchdown, for 31-0 half time lead.

The result no longer in question and conditions deteriorating the second half was a more measured affair. Burnham, determined to save face, kept the ball tight in the forwards and denied Falmouth possession, with very little passing or kicking. Ryan Beard, for the hosts, finishing off a series of drives with a dive over the line.

The Eagles responded immediately with a break from full back, Lee Humphreys setting up a maul, close to the line, from which replacement Seb Firth, showing great strength, broke through to score, Edmonds converting.

With the result no longer in doubt, the Eagles used their full complement of replacements as conditions became increasingly treacherous, scoring was completed with a penalty try to Burnham, as a result of Falmouth players diving into a scrum as it crossed their line.

The Eagles have now completed a hat trick of league victories but with the relegation struggle being a dogfight between seven sides, face another crucial match against Chard at home on Saturday.
