Falmouth Golf Club saw 64 tee it up on Saturday for the Frank George Salver on another fine day for golf, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Vice Captain Ray A Clark deservedly won with a good haul of 41 stableford points with respective nines of 21 and 20 points. Ray carded a rare birdie at the 230 yard par three fourth hole, followed by a brace of birdies at the eighth and 16th holes.

Runner up with 39 points was Rob Eccleston, and third was Nick Brown also with 39 points with nines of 19 and 20 points.

Nick also had a slow start as he “blobbed” the first but birdied the 16th to help secure his prize.

On Sunday the Royal Duchy Bowls were played for in mixed pairs over 27 holes. Lynne and Dicky Dickinson were deserving winners with a splendid total of 63 stableford points.

Lynne had an inspired day as she also won the Ladies Longest Drive and Nearest the pin prize on the second and ninth holes respectively.

Runners up were Director of Golf Steve Burrows and Tina Stead with another fine total of 61 points. Third with 59 points were Bill and Carol Mitcham. The prizes were presented by Barry Taylor of the Royal Duchy Hotel.

  • Four players recorded net 65 and could only be separated on countback at Budock Vean in a hotly contested men’s Monthly Medal sponsored by Ted Barlow.

With a fine round playing off a handicap of 8, David Allen turned in the low gross 73 of the day to win the medal, runner-up was Keith Whitbread and third was Geoff Mills.

In midweek the Ladies played for their Medal Winners Benney Cup, which Barbara Craig won with a net 72. In the parallel extra medal, Sue Parsons played very well for her winning net 66.

In the Seniors Stableford, David Stevens played great golf to record 41 pts; Brian Hoskins was second with 38 and Martin Salomé third on countback.

  • Last week’s activities at Praa Sands got underway on Monday evening with a mixed pairs competition playing for the Gwionlas Trophy.

Alison Jacka and Rodger Pearce were the eventful winners scoring 55.5. Sue Harvey and Allan Lawrence were second with 57, Linda Gale and Jim Duffield came third with 58.5 and Phyllis Williams and Mike Hichens came fourth with 59.5.

The Seniors Monthly Medal on Wednesday was very well contested. A fine round by Ken Lawrence saw him win comfortably with 58 points. Phil Hales was second with 62, Tom Armstrong came third with 63 and Mel Smith came fourth with 64.

On Saturday the ladies played for the Barbara Loveday Trophy. after a very competitive round Anne Griffiths came through as a worthy winner with 35 pts, Linda Gale was second with 32, Anna Harry was third on 32 pts (lcb) and Diana Lyons was fourth with 31.

The Willy Bromley Trophy was the focus for the men on Sunday. Life member Michael Jacka played excellently finishing the clear winner. 65 - 08 = 57 - 1st, Scott Willett came second with 60, Joe Hill was third with 61 and Davey Joes was fourth.
