A FULL week of competitions at Praa Sands culminated on Sunday when Fred Hayne won the Kenny Pascoe Memorial Trophy with a super 45 points.

John Murrish was second with 40 points, Jess Willard third with 39 points and John Warden fourth with 38 points.

The Ladies held their Invitation Day on Saturday afternoon. The overall winners of the four ball better ball competition were Anne Griffiths (Lady Captain Praa Sands) and her guest, Nicky Flett (Budock Vean), with a superb 45 points.

Anna Harry (Praa Sands) and Caroline Hardman (West Cornwall) were second with 42 points on countback from Lily Hiscott (Praa Sands) and Judy Harris (Mullion), and Phyllis Williams (Praa Sands) and Sally Markham (Mullion) respectively.

Lily Hiscott also won the longest drive for handicaps above 26 and Judy Harris the longest drive for handicaps 25 and below. Mary Jones (West Cornwall) was nearest the pin on the ninth.

The best back nine went to Sue Harvey (Praa Sands) and Margaret Richardson (Mullion) with 21 points, and the best front nine to Di Lyons (Praa Sands) and Mary Jones (West Cornwall) with 22.

Phyllis Williams and Mike Hichens were the outstanding winners of the Sandum Salver last Monday evening with 42 points. Lily Hiscott and Tony Boyce were second with 35 points on the last nine holes from Sue Harvey and Allan Lawrence in third place, with Linda Gale and Jim Duffield fourth with 31 points.

Mike Hichens won the Treliske Trophy on Wednesday with a superb 69 -16 =53. Tony Hodgkiss took second (79 -21 =58) on the last nine from Mike Brownfield (78 -20 =58) with Alun Dixon in third with 79 -20 =59.

  • Ted Barlow and Ashley Jackson won the Gardner Salvers foursomes medal competition at Budock Vean with a marvellous net 63.

Tony Ramsden and David Gudzij came second with an excellent net 65, while third were David Penrose and Kevin Bate on 70. In the lady Captains Day, Barbara Craig won the Stableford on countback from Nina Hann with 41 pts, in third was the Lady Vice-Captain Nicky Flett on 40 pts.

In the Seniors Medal event earlier in the week, club secretary Dennis McQuillan recorded his best round ever with a net 59 to win from Andrew Varney on 61.

  • The Arthur Bugden Trophy took place at Mullion Golf Club last week.

This competition is a ‘Yellow Ball’ format with each playing using the yellow ball on alternate holes in turn to score double Stableford points when playing. One other player’s score is also added to have two out of three scores counting.

Phil Dickson, Gary Howells and Simon Bindon were the winners with 131 points. Rob Wheeler, Glynn Coates and John Moody came second with 130, and Paul Head, Robert Curnow and Brian Wooller came third with 122.
