Helston won the Mining Division Evening League Final on their own ground on Wednesday night, writes Michael Weeks.

They beat Falmouth’s Seaview Old Boys by just nine runs, in a game played in the true spirit of the competition.

Helston’s openers Carl Woolnough (33) and Owen Holton (30) both retired on reaching the mandatory score of 30. Allister George (23) was the first wicket to fall at 114.

Mark Thomas made 28 and Sam Rule retired on 30, just before the overs ran out at 158-2. Simon Bailey took one for 17 off four overs.

Seaview, in only their second season in the competition, made a great effort and at 130-6, with five overs remaining, the game was in the balance.

They needed 17 off the last two overs but Helston held their nerve. The returning Dickon Robertson was run out for 34, with four balls remaining, at 149 all out. Mark Stevens made 30.

Helston skipper Carl Woolnough received the ‘Michael Evans Trophy’ from Helston Club President Peter Morris and was also named Man of the Match. He took three for 24 to add to his 33.

Helston will now play St Ives in the West Cornwall Challenge Match at Camborne on Wednesday.
