Cornwall travel to Banbury on Sunday for the penultimate game of this year’s Unicorns Counties Championship, writes Michael Weeks.

The hosts are third in the table, 21 points behind leaders Berkshire, who have won all four games.

Berkshire complete their campaign at Cheshire and Wiltshire and should they slip up Oxfordshire will be keen to win against the Duchy to keep the pressure on.

Cornwall lie in fourth spot but are 37 points off the pace so have no chance of returning to Banbury for the four-day final next month.

Cornwall have made one change from the side that beat Cheshire with 21-year-old Redruth batsman Will Harris called up for his debut.

Having played youth cricket for Redruth he moved away from the area but returned this year and soon made an impression, including a match winning innings at Penzance in the Premier League. Werrington’s Adam Hodgson makes way.

Cornwall: Matt Rowe (Capt) (Henley-on-Thames), Lewis Goldsworthy (Troon), Tom Rowe (Kimberley Institute), Matt Robins (Werrington), Sam Wood (Plumtree), Paul Smith (Werrington), Scott Harvey (wk) (Truro), Will Harris (Redruth), James Turpin (Wadebridge), Andrew Libby (St Austell), Tom Dinnis (Werrington).

  • Redruth’s Sam Wyatt made the second highest individual score in Cornwall Schools’ history when he hit 188 for the Under 17’s in their championship game with the Isle of Wight at Ryde last week.

The 169 partnership between Wyatt and Ellis Whiteford (78) at Ryde is a new record seventh wicket partnership for Cornwall youth cricket over all age groups.

Cornwall won the game on first innings. There was a disappointing end to the tour however when the one-day County Cup game against the Islanders, at Newclose, was washed out without a ball bowled.

Cornwall have therefore not made it to the National Finals this year, having famously won the B Division title against Leicestershire last August.

The Isle of Wight topped the group with three wins and the cancellation to finish a point above Berkshire. Cornwall had two wins to finish on nine points.
