Falmouth Town 3, Elburton Villa 2

Falmouth Town held off a stern fightback from Elburton Villa to move to the top of the SWPL Premier table on Saturday.

Jordan Annear scored before Ryan Martt doubled the lead less than a minute later, with David Broglino scoring a penalty as Town cruised into a three-goal lead.

But Josh Tattersall pulled one back for the visitors just before half-time before adding another with 15 minutes to go, but Town held on.

Town's first came on ten minutes when James Ward headed Broglino's free-kick is towards the back post with Annear prodding home from close range.

Hardly a minute had passed before Villa keeper Jack Dixon was picking the ball out of his net again with Martt slotting neatly into the corner.

With their tails up, Town pressed for a third with a good run and cross from Town left-back Ollie Moody being scrambled away before it can reach striker Jack Bowyer's feet.

An Elburton handball gave Town the chance to make it three from the spot on the half-hour mark, and Broglino’s kick was too powerful for Dixon who managed to get a hand to it.

But the visitors were back in the game just before the break with Tattersall’s driven effort from the edge of the box finding its way through a crowd of players.

Bowyer - in search of his first competitive goal for Town since joining from Sticker in the summer - missed a good opportunity to do so when he fired over the crossbar following a good run down the left from Annear on the hour.

But Tattersall then gave his side a sniff of an unlikely point on 75 minutes when he beat Ryan Barnes to the ball to prod in his second of the game.

What could - and maybe should - have been a comfortable ending for Falmouth ended up being a nervous wait for the whistle, with Barnes saving one close range effort soon after before Nick Aplin missed a good opportunity in the dying moments.
