New Falmouth RFC captain Tom Spiller has voiced his pride at being given the armband following the retirement of Eagles stalwart Justyn Irons, writes Joseph Macey.

Tom Spiller said: “I’ve been here since I was eight years old and I have worked my way through. I got to the seniors at 17 years old and progressed through the ranks, this is an ethos that people need to play rugby right the way through and stick at it, Falmouth is what I am.

“I had just finished training and was just about to grab a shower then I got pulled aside by Graham and I was privileged to be asked to be captain of Falmouth.

“Obviously I’ve been around a little bit but it’s a pleasure to be asked to captain the side.”

“I would like to think I will put my best out on the field and I will try to lead from the front that way.

“The boys know I will put on a shirt from the back row to the 15 position but I like to set an example that way and I will speak up when needed.”

Falmouth just escaped relegation last season by a single bonus point after a harsh introduction into the new division.

Spiller believes that Falmouth will have more success this year after a long adjustment period.

He said: “I think we were a little bit more savvy in our build up play towards the end of last year whereas at the beginning we were still learning and we were dropping points and towards the end of the season we picked up a few points against opposition such as St Ives and Sidmouth, picking up those points were crucial in the end.”
