Falmouth RFC enjoyed the ideal start to their Western Counties West season with a 22-17 win at local rivals Truro on Saturday.

Eagles coach, Graham Whitmore, said: “It was overall a strong performance, it was a typical local derby, lots of emotion and such but I thought we looked pretty sharp in attack and particularly through the back line.

"We took our opportunities well, the team defence was strong and overall a very solid performance.”

Next up for the Eagles is a home encounter with Wadebridge Camels on Saturday, as Falmouth step out at their Recreation Ground home for the first time this season.

The Camels lost to Crediton in their opening game at the weekend, but will be boosted by their three wins over the Eagles in the 2017/18 campaign.

Falmouth lost 16-33 in the corresponding fixture last season, while Wadebridge won a high-scoring affair 48-35 at their Molesworth Field home in March, as well as emerging victorious in their Cornwall Knockout Cup quarter-final earlier in the year.

“We were pretty close in all three matches,” Whitmore said. “They were stronger than us, there’s no doubt about that, but we weren’t a long way short of them.

“Certainly in the last of the three of the games we scored five tries in that game and showed that we can play rugby against them.

“I’m not reading too much into results so far but they lost at home on Saturday to Crediton. I think they’ll be stung by that and they’ll be coming out with a lot of ambition to perform better in the second so it’s going to be a huge challenge for us and we know that, but hopefully being at home we’ve got to make sure that we really get our performances right.”
