Falmouth 20, Wadebridge 18

The Eagles extended their unbeaten run with a hard fought 20-18 win over local rivals Wadebridge Camels on Saturday, writes Joseph Macey.

Falmouth had not beaten Wadebridge in their last three attempts but tries from Trevellyan Ward, Tom Simmons and a late penalty from Matt Horton ended that winless run.

Head Coach, Graham Whitmore, said: “The changing room is a good place to be at the moment, I know we are going to have some tough times during the season but let’s relish these occasions and make sure our home form is good.

“We pulled through a tight game today and the boys showed a lot of character and resilience in the way they played. I thought our defence was outstanding throughout the game and we had very few missed tackles and they brought a lot of physicality to the game, but it was just a typical local derby.”

The game had a competitive edge to it and looked at one stage tempers were going to boil over with Wadebridge receiving two yellow cards and a red card. Aside from that the game was enthralling with both teams constantly pegging each other back.

The score could have been a lot different as Falmouth had the ball over the line twice, only to drop it at the crucial stage.

With ten minutes left and Camels leading 18-17 Falmouth were awarded a penalty which Matt Horton stepped up to take and put through the posts.

Wadebridge had chances of their own also, they were given a penalty with almost the last kick of the game which was narrowly missed.

Horton said: “You always expect a feisty game in a local derby so we always thought it to be a little bit competitive than normal, and you’ve just got to front up to it sometimes.

“When I am kicking I just like to centre myself and concentrate on the task at hand and not worry about anything else so for me it is always 0-0 whenever I kick.

“This has all come from just working as a team, the more we are coming together as a team the more things are working out for us on the pitch.”
