Porthleven manager Alan Carey was understandably delighted with his side’s start to the season, with the Fishermen winning all five games they have played so far.

The latest came on Saturday when they beat Dobwalls 3-1 at their Gala Parc home.

Carey said: “We’ve put together some good performances and the lads have done really well, so a great start really to go five games unbeaten.

“It’s not been the easiest of starts so I’m very very pleased and couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Carey praised striker Matt Drummond, whose two goals in the win over Dobwalls took his tally to 11 for the season after just five games.

Carey said: “He’s on fire isn’t he? He’s lively, he’s looking sharp, he wants the ball, he’s making some great runs and he’s got a new lease of life, he’s playing ever so well.”

Carey also reserved praise for Rob Carey, who set up all three goals in Saturday’s win.

“I’ve always said he’s a right-sided player,” Carey said. “Other people think he’s a striker, I’ve always said he’s a right-sided player I think that’s his strongest position. He’s got great speed and when he delivers a ball he can deliver a ball with pace and I think he’s playing ever so well at the moment.

“It’s difficult isn’t it, to blow your own son up but I have to say that he’s playing ever so well.”

Port will now be hoping that they can carry their form into the FA Vase, with the club returning to the national competition after a three-year absence this weekend when they host SWPL Premier side Torpoint Athletic (kick-off 3pm).

“That’s something that is obviously very special to me and to Porthleven, with our past history there,” Carey said. “But I think it is a game now that we can just go to and enjoy.

“At the end of the day they’re a Premiership side and they’re probably supposed to come down and beat us, so I think the onus is on them so I am not really too worried about the fixture, I think it’s just a day that we can go and enjoy.”
