Newton Abbot 37, Camborne 38
Camborne ran in six tries to record a memorable narrow away win at Newton Abbot.
Man of the match for the Cherry & Whites left wing Alex Ducker crossed for no less than five touchdowns including a quickfire first quarter hat trick that saw the visitors go 19-0 up.
Minutes in No 8 Dave Roberts gave the speedster his first opportunity courtesy of a well timed pass with debutant Connor Swan landing a good conversion.
Two further scores, the latter after scrum half Taron Peacock’s deft switch and a conversion from full back Swan completed the early onslaught.
Shell shocked Newton Abbot then hit back hard in the 2nd quarter and remarkably turned things around to lead 22-19 at the interval.
Early in the second half Camborne slipped further behind to another converted score however a 4th dot down for Tucker followed by a superb effort by young right wing Lewis Thomas plus a Swan conversion gave the visitors a narrow 31-29 advantage.
Crucially Ducker then collected his 5th try with a long range effort and with Swan again adding the extras ‘Town’ looked out of sight with a lead of nine points going into the closing stages.
Although the home side got closer with a drop goal and a last gasp try the Cherry & Whites were not to be denied their victory after a thrilling encounter.
Camborne: tries, Ducker 5, Thomas; cons, Swan 4.
