Tavistock’s 7-1 thrashing of Bodmin Town in the SWPL Premier was among the big moments on the latest weekend of the local football season.

But who scored nine on their way to cup victory, who suffered an unexpected abandonment, and which goalie swapped gloves for goals?

Packet Sport offers you five things that you may have missed from the weekend's football action.

Torpoint score nine

This weekend marked the start of the superbly-titled Walter C Parson Funeral Directors League Cup, and with it providing the chance to forget about the league campaign for a week or so.

This was certainly the case for league strugglers Sticker and Wendron, who earned wins at Wadebridge and Penzance respectively.

However it was at The Mill where the cup’s biggest result occurred, with SWPL Premier side Torpoint Athletic putting nine goals past SWPL Division 1 East side Newton Abbot Spurs.

John Heveran, Rory Simmons, and a Danny Zalick hat-trick gave the hosts a 5-0 lead at the break, before Scott Blatchford matched his team-mate’s efforts with a treble of his own in the second half, while Sam West also got on the scoresheet.

It has been a good week of cup action for Athletic, whose FA Vase game at Porthleven last weekend also featured nine goals, although that time they conceded three of them in a 6-3 win at Gala Parc.

Goalkeeper glory

Everyone loves a goal from a goalkeeper. How about Peter Schmeichel’s overhead kick for Manchester United? Or Paul Robinson’s long-range free-kick for Spurs circa 2009?

Well Hayle goalkeeper Danny Ford joined the club on Saturday during his side’s 5-2 Combination League win at Mullion when his long goal kick went over everybody – including the Mullion goalkeeper – and into the hosts’ net.

Hayle went on to win 5-2 and move up to sixth in the table, with Kane Williams and Sean Watts adding to Cameron Irish’s double.

Penryn face up to defeat

It has been a good start to life at Kernick so far for Penryn Athletic boss Harry Pope, with his side sitting fourth in the Combination League table and the top scorers in the division.

But they suffered their second defeat of the season in bizarre fashion at leaders Perranporth on Saturday, when a clearance struck Matt Laithwaite in the face and deflected into Justin Searle’s path to fire home and double his side’s lead.

Kyle Brown scored Perranporth’s other goal as the home side strengthened their position at the top of the table.

It was also a happy return for Perranporth goalkeeper Kyle Winnan, who played for Athletic last season before joining the Combo champions in the summer.

Junior Cup kick-off

The Cornwall Junior Cup began on Saturday with 74 sides beginning their annual quest to reach May’s showpiece, with the first-round ties split into East and West sections across the county.

The biggest win of the day came on the banks of the River Tamar as Stoke Climsland won 11-1 at home to Grampound, while Probus also bagged 11 goals in their tie with opponents Penzance reserves, who scored twice in reply.

Thirty-seven ties were scheduled to be played across the Duchy but nine games either fell foul of the weather or were abandoned (see Holmans v Goonhavern below) and will be played this weekend instead.

The second round is on Saturday, October 27.

Holmans hold-up

Holman SC’s match with Goonhavern was one of the many Junior Cup matches played on Saturday, and the game caught the eye for all the wrong reasons.

The clash between last season’s two relegated Combination League clubs was abandoned a few minutes from time following an altercation between a Goonhavern player and the Holmans linesman after Goonhavern had taken a 4-3 lead in the dying minutes of extra time.

The match will be replayed this Saturday (kick-off 2pm).
