Helston Athletic 0, Callington Town 0

It was a tale of missed chances as Helston Athletic slipped to a goalless draw at home to strugglers Callington Town on Saturday.

Tyler Cheshire and Lewis Tonkin had the best of the opportunities but the Blues could not find a way past Callington ‘keeper Sam Borthwick.

Both sides started slowly as they adapted to the effects of Storm Callum, with Callington left back Callum Holder’s header dropping wide in the first real effort on goal in the 26th minute before Harrison Jewell fired wide for the hosts shortly after.

The best chance of the half fell to the Blues just before half-time when Tonkin saw his shot tipped into the path of Cheshire, who appeared to have a simple tap-in but for a superb sliding tackle from Jamie Rowlands.

Cheshire and Tonkin both brought further saves out of the Cally custodian shortly after half-time, before Billy Coton almost nabbed the lead for the visitors when his 25-yard effort deflected inches wide of Barrie Wyatt’s goal.

Centre-back Ryan Beattie fired Ryan Chinn’s cross agonisingly wide before Tonkin blazed Phil Cattran’s pass over the bar as Helston continued to ask all of the questions.

A Blues goal seemed imminent as Cheshire hit another effort wide before Cattran headed over the crossbar.

But they still could not beat Borthwick, who managed to deny Cheshire one more time in the 75th minute when he raced out of his box to close down the attacker’s attempted lob and preserve a much-need point for his side.
