Helston Athletic assistant manager Steve Jewell insists that it is a matter of when his side return to form, rather than if.

The Blues had to settle for a goalless draw at home to strugglers Callington Town in their SWPL Premier clash on Saturday despite having a host of chances to score.

Helston are now winless in their last seven league matches, although they did beat Penzance 3-2 after extra-tie in the first round of the Cornwall Senior Cup last Friday.

“It feels like a loss because we had enough chances to put it to bed,” Jewell said. “We had probably eight good chances, they probably had a couple. I think if we won 3-0 they couldn’t have complained. We kept the clean sheet, that’s our first one for the season so that’s a positive.

“We’ve got strength and depth in the midfield and we’ve got some good lads up top, it’s just at the minute it’s not clicking for us where we’re banging the goals in so hopefully as the season goes on they’ll score.

“It is obviously disappointing to create as many chances as we did and the boys may have just snapped at it a little bit, and they’re good players so on another day they would have buried them.”

Saturday’s draw with Callington was the Blues’ tenth of the season, with Helston sitting 14th in the SWPL Premier table with ten points to their name so far, and Jewell admits that the current total is not good enough.

“That is disappointing,” he said. “At the start of the season you look at the squad we had last year and then look at the squad we have this year, Mass [manager Steve Massey] has definitely improved it.

“The results just aren’t clicking at the minute but they will, we’re still building and Mass is trying to get them to play the way he wants them to play. It will come good, it’s just when really.”

Helston will now turn their attention to a tricky tie at local rivals Falmouth Town in the Walter C Parson League Cup second round on Friday.

It is a daunting task for the Blues, with in-form Town, currently second in the league, having scored 34 goals in their previous five games.

“I know most of their players, and they’re a great team aren’t they? They’re a great team and it’s a local derby which gives it a little bit more edge. We’ll go down there and give it our best and see where it takes us really.”

Kick-off at Bickland Park on Friday is at 7.30pm.
