RYAN Howe’s second-half penalty dumped Wendron United out of the Walter C Parson League Cup second round on Saturday.

Dron had plenty of possession but struggled to test the visiting ‘keeper, with Howe’s spot kick settling the tie 20 minutes from time.

The game came alive on 25 minutes as a lack of communication at the back allowed Rory Jarvis in, but his effort was well saved by Dobwalls ‘keeper Toby Chapman.

Dobwalls missed their own golden chance two minutes later as Dan Perryman’s free-kick struck the bar, with Martin Marshall heading the rebound over with Wendron ‘keeper Dan Stedman on the floor.

The hosts went back on the attack and were a post’s width from taking the lead when Cameron Wheat struck the upright when trying to convert Jarvis’ cross at the back post.

Dron ended the first half strongly as Ben Ringrose almost headed home Yeshe Briar’s curled free-kick, with the effort bouncing over the bar.

The second half was a more cagey affair until Sam Humphries brought down Dobwalls forward Sam Ingram on 70 minutes, with the referee pointing to the spot to the disbelief of the Wendron defender and his team-mates.

But the penalty stood with Howe sending Stedman the wrong way from the spot, tucking the ball into the bottom corner.

Dobwalls should have sealed the tie eight minutes from time when Perryman burst through but could not beat Stedman.

Wendron’s last chance came and went on 85 minutes when Rory Jarvis offloaded to Jack Stocker, who could not keep his effort from flying over the bar.
