Porthleven 1, Callington Town 0

MATT Fox’s second-half strike ensured Cornwall Senior Cup victory against higher-division opposition for Porthleven at Gala Parc on Saturday.

The hosts were on top for much of the tie but it was not until 15 minutes from time that Fox sealed Port’s place in the third round with a superb volley.

The two sides - currently separated by six league positions - started well with Callington’s George Harvey firing inches wide from distance before Rob Carey was denied by visiting 'keeper Sam Borthwick from close range.

Fox also spurned a one-on-one with Borthwick before Matt Drummond shot wide from Carey's cross.

But it was Cally who could have led just before half-time when Paul McAdam's header was headed off the line by Jake Lugg.

Falmouth Packet:

The 51st minute saw a rarity in football as an indirect free-kick in the box was awarded for a Porthleven backpass, but the kick from eight-yards was cleared away.

Port resumed control and missed another big chance on 68 minutes when Drummond almost managed to turn Carey’s cross in at the far post.

But the only goal of the game came a few minutes later with a free-kick finding it way to Fox who volleyed into the top corner.

Falmouth Packet:

Port pressed for a second and nearly had it when Drummond struck the bar, while Borthwick came to the rescue to deny new Port signing tornado Bello on three occasions late on.
