Mousehole 0, Helston Athletic 2

HELSTON beat last season’s Cornwall Senior Cup finalists Mousehole to book their place in the third round of this year’s competition at Trungle Parc on Saturday.

The Blues took the lead on 62 minutes when Kirk Davies’ long free-kick was headed on by Ryan Beattie towards Phil Cattran, who hit a magnificent volley into the top corner from just inside the box.

Matt Bye sealed the win for the Blues with an equally brilliant finish five minutes from time, playing a o -two with Cattran at a short corner before lashing the ball home from the corner of the box.

Manager Steve Massey hailed the display as the “best all-round performance” since joining the club last year.

He said: “I don’t think a lot of people gave us a chance to be perfectly honest. A lot of teams wouldn’t have kept a clean-sheet against Mousehole.

“I would go as far to say that for all-around team performance, right from the back from Barrie Wyatt right up front to Scott Beattie and Phil Catts [Cattran] who is absolutely on fire at the moment, this was the best all-around team performance I have witnessed from the boys since I’ve been here.”

Helston: B Wyatt, K Davies, G Roberts, R Beattie, J Cooper, L Tonkin (K Cornish 30), R Chinn (P Miller 75), M Bye, T Cheshire (H Jewell 55) S Beattie, P Cattran. Subs (unused): A Wharton, J Flamank.

  • Helston host Camelford in the South West Peninsula League tomorrow night before visiting Saltash United on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
