Dobwalls 2, Porthleven 3

A BRACE from Matt Fox helped Porthleven into the quarter-finals of the Cornwall Charity Cup after edging a tight affair at Dobwalls’ Lantoom Park on Saturday.

Fox’s volley put the visitors in front early on before a smart lob levelled for the hosts, only for Fox to regain the lead for Port just before the half-hour mark.

Tornado Bello converted from the penalty spot after half-time to give the away side breathing space, with a late strike only turning out to be a consolation as Port squeezed into the last eight.

The visitors got off on the front foot when a corner found its way to the feet of Fox who set himself before volleying into the roof of the net.

But the Fishermen were pegged back a few minutes later when an audacious lob caught Port ‘keeper Steve Parker-Billinge off his line and dropped into the unguarded net.

However the visitors restored their lead on 27 minutes when Tom Annear, making his second debut for the club after re-joining from Falmouth Town in the week, crossed towards Fox who was on hand to fire past Dobwalls ‘keeper Tom Chapman.

The score remained the same until midway through the second half, when the Fishermen were awarded a penalty following a foul on Annear, with Bello stepping up to score from the spot for the second week in succession.

But the hosts were not out of it and halved the deficit late on with a quick counter resulting in a shot in at the near post, but the visitors held on to book their place in the next round.

Porthleven will join Illogan RBL, St Blazey, Penzance, Liskeard Athletic, Polperro, Wendron United and either Wadebridge Town or St Dennis in February’s quarter-finals.
