Falmouth 22, Tiverton 3

Falmouth cruised to a first league win in three games with a dominating 22-3 home victory over Tiverton on Saturday in the Tribute Western Counties West, writes Joseph Macey.

Tries from Alistair Harding, Tommy Job and Tom Edmonds sealed an excellent day for The Eagles in blustery conditions at the Recreation Ground.

Head Coach, Graham Whitmore, said: “What we spoke about before the game is where the squad were emotionally as individuals and collectively as a group and whether we are ready for the fight and that was the challenge that we laid down. We said that work rate was non-negotiable and all the areas where no talent is required was so important to us, the chasing of kicks, the work rate to get back and I thought we wanted the game so much today and that clearly shone through.

“Game management was the big thing during the week, we have been putting ourselves in good positions then making poor decisions as to where to attack and we exploited weaknesses really well today, it was a big step in the right direction for us.”

It took until the 16th minute for the deadlock to be broken, Alistair Harding used his pace to break through and he evaded a challenge to score. Tom Edmonds added the extras. Edmonds extended The Eagles lead shortly after with a penalty.

Falmouth had a strong grip on the game from start to finish. Tiverton struggled to create many scoring opportunities, which was down to the excellent defensive work of Falmouth.

Try scorer, Alistair Harding, said: “On a personal level it is good to get my first try, the team did really well to restrict them to three points. Maybe unlucky not to get the bonus point but a really good performance.”

The second half was almost a repeat of the first and Falmouth had the game all but sealed up when a superb flowing move between Edmonds and Leigh Humphreys set up Tommy Job for 15-0.

Edmonds capped off a brilliant performance with a try for himself, receiving the ball out wide and driving down the line to score.

Tiverton did score a penalty with minutes to go but that didn’t take the gloss off a strong team performance from The Eagles.

Next Saturday, Falmouth travel away to face Wadebridge Camels, kick-off TBC.
