Maidenhead 25, Camborne 24

Camborne put in a wholehearted performance to deservedly gain a brace of bonus points as they went down by the narrowest of margins on the long trip to Berkshire.

Hard hit by injury and unavailability the patched up visiting side actually outscored their hosts by four tries to three and were unfortunate to have had a potentially match-winning second Tommy Southworth effort disallowed.

Well rested after an overnight stay in Swindon, ‘Town’ surged into a tenth minute lead when the prolific Alex Ducker crossed for yet another try. The winger duly converted from under the posts for 7-0.

Maidenhead opened their account with a penalty midway through the half before taking a 10-7 lead as the interval neared.

The Cherry & Whites took back the advantage early in the second period with centre Declan Matthews going over, but with the home side soon notching another converted touchdown it needed hooker Southworth’s 57th minute dot down to level matters at 17-17.

Inside the final quarter Maidenhead moved in front once more with a penalty followed soon after with their third try of the game for an eight points advantage.

Camborne quickly responded in style with an excellent try from fly half Rhodri Mcatee to bag the bonus point with Ducker booting the extras to make it 25-24.

Chances came and went in the closing stages as the home side held on to avenge their defeat at the Rec on the opening day of the season.
