To raise monies for ‘Wooden Spoon’, last Saturday four volunteers, namely Rebecca Watson, Rachel Trembath, Mark Roberts and Cornwall’s representative on the RFU, Alan Milliner, undertook the quite considerable task of driving to every affiliated rugby club with facilities to the Cornwall RFU.

In less than ideal weather conditions, the drive commenced at 6am from St. Just RFC and then visited all 30 clubs before finishing at the Mennaye Field, Penzance, where the Cornish Pirates were playing London Irish.

Accompanying the drivers during the charity drive was ‘Wenzil’, the Wooden Spoon bear. Photographs of him were taken at each club – to evidence attendance! – including a final one with the Cornish Pirates.

Besides the charity drive, a match day collection also took place at the Mennaye Field on the day which raised the sum of £570.19. Speaking on behalf of Wooden Spoon, David Pooley said: “Our grateful and sincere thanks are once again extended to the Pirates and their supporters. The amount raised reflects the superb generosity shown Wooden Spoon and is very much appreciated.

“All monies, including those raised through the charity drive, will remain in Cornwall in support of children and young people with a disability or facing disadvantage.”
