FALMOUTH Town will aim to pick up their first league win for two months when they welcome South West Peninsula League Premier leaders Plymouth Argyle to Bickland Park on Saturday (ko 3pm).

Town are on a four-game winless run in the SWPL Premier that stretches back to October, with their last league victory coming at Bodmin Town’s Priory Park on October 24.

Town missed the chance to end the run last weekend when their game at Ivybridge Town fell victim to the wet weather that saw the vast majority of matches postponed.

Manager Andrew Westgarth said: “It’s rained off at the best of times so we semi expected it really with the forecast and the way their pitch holds the water.”

Alex Battle’s penalty earned Argyle a slender 1-0 win when the two sides met in the corresponding fixture last season, while there was controversy when the teams were due to meet in April of this year, with Argyle forfeiting the clash at their Coach Road home.

The club cited injuries, end-of-term exams for under-16 players, and the first team’s crucial Sky Bet League One promotion six-pointer at Scunthorpe United the following day as reasons for their cancellation.

Westgarth said: “They don’t come much tougher than Argyle, but it’s the same old question with Argyle, you never really know which team they’re going to play.

“Even if they haven’t got any first-team players in there they’re still a decent outfit so it’s going to be a tough game regardless.”

Midfielder Martyn Duff could return for Town after missing the last few games due to injury but strike duo Jack Bowyer and Matt Buchan are set to miss out due to suspension and injury respectively.

Some much-needed good news for Westgarth is that forward Marcello Jones and midfielder Jack Webber should be available over the busy Christmas and New Year period.

Opposition in brief

The Pilgrims have been the runaway leaders in the SWPL Premier this term, having won 16 of their 22 games so far this campaign.

Their 50 points puts them nine clear of second-placed Tavistock, although the Lambs have five games in hand.

The Pilgrims have played more league games than any other side in the division, but will come into Saturday’s game having not played since their 3-1 win at Ivybridge on November 23.

Around the grounds

Helston Athletic will hope to return to winning ways this weekend when they travel to Torpoint Athletic for their latest SWPL Premier match (kick-off 3pm).

The Blues saw their impressive recent form take a bit of stumble last time out when they surrendered a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 at Millbrook.

Helston have already tasted victory over Torpoint this season, winning 2-1 when the teams met at Kellaway Park four weeks ago, with Scott Beattie’s second-half strike sealing the win after Phil Cattran had cancelled out John Heveran’s early header for Torpoint.

The Blues will remain in 12th regardless of Saturday’s result, but three points would go a long way towards closing the gap on the likes of Torpoint, Millbrook and Newquay in the lower reaches of the top half of the table.

SWPL Division 1 West leaders Porthleven travel to Dobwalls’ Lantoom Park as they look to strengthen their grip on top spot in the division (kick-off 3pm).

Port beat Dobwalls 2-1 in their last away fixture three weeks ago, when Tornado Bello’s penalty secured the Fishermen’s spot in the Cornwall Charity Cup quarter-finals.

Wendron United will hope for third time lucky this weekend when they visit Wadebridge Town (ko 3pm).

Dron have seen their last two away fixtures – at Bere Alston United and Plymstock United respectively – called off in the last two weeks.

Dron will hope that the recent postponements will not have disturbed their rhythm too much, having won nine of their last 11 games in all competitions.

In the Combination League, leaders Falmouth Town reserves will look to maintain their four-point lead over Perranporth and Helston Athletic reserves with a win at sixth-placed Hayle (kick off 2.30pm).

The Blues, fresh from a 4-1 win at home to St Just in one of only two league games to take place last weekend, will try to close the gap on their rivals when they entertain Illogan RBL.

Penryn Athletic will try to emulate Helston’s win over the Tinners when they visit the west Cornwall club this weekend, with three points potentially moving Athletic up three places to fourth.

Wendron United reserves could move up as many as six places to tenth if they see off strugglers West Cornwall, while Porthleven reserves are set for a tough afternoon at St Day.
