Wadebridge Town 1, Wendron United 1

RORY Jarvis’ second -half equaliser ensured that Wendron extended their good form into Christmas after drawing 1-1 at third-placed Wadebridge in their South West Peninsula League Division 1 West match on Saturday.

Ben Williams put the home side in front in the first half, but Jarvis’ emphatic finish after the break rescued a point for Dron, who have now lost just two of their last 11 matches in all competitions.

Dron lost their first four league games this season, the last of which was a 1-0 defeat at home to Wadebridge in the reverse fixture on September 8, with manager Jack Greenwood delighted at how his side have turned their fortunes around.

He said: “It probably shows where we are in that I’m a little disappointed we didn’t win it.

“It was the toughest team we’ve come up against for a month or two.”

It was a scrappy start for Dron, who had not played since an 8-2 win at home to St Agnes in the Charity Cup three weeks ago, with Wadebridge the better of the two sides in the first half.

But the visitors still had a few opportunities, the first of which came when a defensive error allowed Jarvis to play in Finn Robinson, who should have done better with his shot which failed to test the Wadebridge ‘keeper.

Dron grew into the game as the half wore on and Chris Mulroy missed a great chance to open the scoring when his shot when one-on-one with the ‘keeper clipped the outside of the post.

Robinson and Jarvis were then involved to tee up right-back Joe Souch, who took the ball around the goalkeeper but could not find a finish from a tight angle, with a defender getting back to block the strike.

The hosts took advantage of their opponents’ profligacy and took the lead when Dron gave away a free-kick which was only half cleared, allowing the ball to return to the visitors’ box where Williams was on hand to fire into the bottom corner.

Wendron looked livelier after the break and got their just rewards when Jarvis showed quick feet before rifling home from 20 yards to level the scores.

They went on to be the better side throughout the second half but had stand-in goalkeeper Benji Bryant to thank for making a couple of crucial saves to keep the score level.
