Wadebridge Town 0, Porthleven 4

PORTHLEVEN ensured they would end 2018 at the top of the South West Peninsula League Division 1 West with a fine four-goal victory at third-placed Wadebridge on Saturday.

Matt Drummond put Port ahead inside eight minutes to give the visitors a slender half-time lead, before an own goal, a George Molcher strike and a second from Drummond completed the scoring.

Second-placed Liskeard Athletic’s 5-0 win at home to strugglers Bere Alston United mean the gap remains just two points as the teams head into 2019.

Drummond got the Fishermen off to a flier in the seventh minute when he got on the end of a cross to fire a low shot into the net to score his 16th goal of the season.

Porthleven ‘keeper Scott Kellow – deputising for the unavailable Steve Parker-Billinge – was called into action to make a couple of important saves as the half wore on.

But it was the visitors who grabbed the all-important second goal on the hour when Rob Carey’s cross was parried by Wadebridge ‘keeper Rob Rosevear, but only into the path of his defender who couldn’t stop the ball rebounding into the net.

Molcher made sure of the points in the 76th minute with a fine finish from the edge of the box after combining well with Tornado Bello.

Drummond then completed the rout with his 17th strike of the campaign a couple of minutes later, finding the top corner with a superb header from a free-kick.

Port almost managed a fifth goal late on when Bello appeared to bundle the ball over the line, but the referee was unconvinced and waved play on.
