Holsworthy 1, Wendron United 2

WENDRON United continued their sparkling form of late with a narrow victory at Holsworthy in their final South West Peninsula League Division 1 West match of 2018 on Saturday.

Wendron went into half-time a goal down but Cameron Wheat levelled the scores in the 48th minute, before having a hand in the winning goal 20 minutes from time.

Dron have now lost just one in their last ten league games, and just two of their last 15 in all competitions, since a 1-0 defeat at home to Wadebridge on September 8.

Wendron started well and had the better of the first half, enjoying a couple of early shots at goal.

But it was Holsworthy who broke the deadlock via a short corner, with the eventual shot going straight in after visiting ‘keeper Jamie Stuart was unsighted.

The away side had an excellent chance to level matters soon after when a good ball by Jack Stocker found Rory Jarvis, whose cross to Wheat was headed over by the youngster from eight yards.

Staring at the prospect of their first defeat since a 3-2 reverse at Penzance on October 17, the visitors came out firing in the second half and levelled within three minutes of the restart. Scott Palmer, on at half-time, teed up Jarvis to shoot at goal and win a corner, from which TJ Walter’s delivery was headed home by Wheat.

Dron completed the turnaround on 70 minutes when Wheat raced through on goal and drilled a low shot towards the corner, with the covering defender only able to divert the ball into the goal.

Wendron: J Stuart, J Souch, H Fuller, S Humphries (C Mulroy), J Webb (F Robinson 10), T Martin, C Wheat, Y Briar (S Palmer HT), J Stocker, R Jarvis, T Walter.

  • Wendron’s first match of 2019 is a Cornwall Senior Cup third round tie at home to St Stephens Borough on Saturday, January 5 (kick-off 2pm).
