St Day 0, Porthleven 9

MATT Drummond scored five goals as Porthleven thrashed St Day to ease into the Cornwall Senior Cup quarter-finals in front of 130 spectators at Vogue Park on Saturday.

The South West Peninsula League Division 1 West leaders showed their quality against the Saints, who themselves are enjoying another solid showing in the Combination League this season.

Manager Alan Carey was delighted with Drummond, who has now scored 22 goals in all competitions this season.

He said: “Drummo’s on fire this year. He’s looking as fit as I’ve ever seen him and he’s scoring for fun really.”

Tornado Bello continued his fine form in front of goal by also getting on the scoresheet. Bello has scored in all but one of Port’s last seven games, including a four-goal haul in an 8-2 win over Bere Alston.

Carey said: “He’s been a really good signing for us, he gives us another option. We can play him up top, we can play him wide, he’s always a threat and with the way Drummo’s been playing it’s only helped him as well really.”

Kyle Fraser opened the scoring on 13 minutes before Drummond took advantage of some hesitancy in the home defence to sweep home a cross to double the lead on 22 minutes.

Port added their third soon after when Chris Wormington picked the ball up from a corner and beat two men before guiding the ball into the net.

Drummond had his second goal of the half just a few minutes later when Rob Carey’s corner was headed back into the middle by Bello for the Fishermen’s top-scorer to head home and give his side a four-goal lead at the break.

The veteran striker sealed his hat-trick early in the second half when he finished off another good move involving Bello and Carey, before Bello made it six from the spot after Fraser was brought down in the box.

Fraser was involved in goal number seven, crossing for Drummond to head home his fourth of the day, before Carey then turned provider for Drummond to net his fifth and Porthleven’s eighth.

Carey finally got himself on the scoresheet after combining with Bello to round off the scoring late on.
