Wendron United 5, St Stephens Borough 0

WENDRON United sealed their place in the Cornwall Senior Cup quarter-finals thanks to a five-goal win at home to East Cornwall Premier League side St Stephens Borough on Saturday.

The in-form South West Peninsula League Division 1 West side were left frustrated in the first half, but second-half strikes from Scott Palmer, Cameron Wheat, TJ Walter, Joe Souch and Finn Robinson ensured Dron’s spot in the last eight.

Wendron have now won seven and drawn two of their last nine games in all competitions, with their last defeat coming more than two months ago in a Walter C Parson League Cup loss to Dobwalls.

Manager Jack Greenwood said: “From the club’s point of view it’s a great achievement to be in the quarter-finals of the Senior Cup and on any given day you don’t know what can happen. It’s great for us and if nothing else it keeps that winning mentality going.

“It was a really good day yesterday, good for the club, good for the team. We’ll wait for that [the quarter-final draw] with bated breath and it will be interesting to see who we get. It’s something we can look forward to and focus on as well but it just keeps that winning run going.”

Dron struggled to really get going in the first half on Saturday, with their only meaningful shot on goal coming when Palmer struck the crossbar with a 20-yard free-kick.

St Stephens had the best chance of the half, with Dron ‘keeper Dan Stedman coming to the rescue to tip a shot over the bar after their strike broke free of the home defence.

Greenwood opted to switch to two up top for the start of the second half and his decision paid dividends almost immediately, with Palmer thundering a shot in from close range within three minutes of the restart.

The hosts were two up soon after when Wheat did well first to win a corner, and then head home from Yeshe Briar’s delivery to bag his third goal in two games.

Walter made it three after good play from Jack Stocker to find his team-mate on the edge of the box, with Walter catching the ‘keeper off guard and arrowing a shot into the bottom corner.

Souch, playing at centre-back in the absence of Jamie Webb and Sam Humphries, grabbed the fourth when he received a cross from Palmer on his chest and beat a defender before slotting home.

Robinson, who was filling in for Souch at right-back, rounded off the scoring in the final ten minutes with the goal of the day, cutting inside onto his left foot and curling the ball into the top corner.
