Saltash United 4, Penryn Athletic 0

PENRYN Athletic were unable to bridge the two-division gap between them and their opponents as their Cornwall Senior Cup run came to an end at holders Saltash United on Saturday.

The Ashes, who beat Mousehole 2-0 in last season's final, led by the same score at the break thanks to goals from Sam Farrant and Chris Menhenick, before a second-half strike from Ryan Richards and a Penryn own goal booked their place in the last eight.

Penryn can now switch their focus back to their Combination League campaign, but still have a Combination League Cup quarter-final against Wendron United to look forward to next month.

The visitors started well with a strong drive from Ryan Reeve enabling Bradley Leivers to shoot wide of Ryan Rickard’s goal, before Rickard did well to keep Jake Shaw’s effort out.

But the South West Peninsula League Premier side were ahead on nine minutes when Farrant coolly converted Lewis Edwards’ low cross from ten yards.

The Ashes doubled their lead seven minutes later when Menhenick curled a beautiful 20-yard free-kick into Penryn 'keeper Ryan Bull’s top corner.

Penryn had a great chance to reduce their arrears when Reeve sent in a super cross towards Billy Williams in the six-yard box who could not keep his header down.

Saltash forward Sam Hughes had been guilty of missing a big chance to make the game safe, but he was able to make amends and tee up Richards to slot in the hosts’ third on 70 minutes.

The scoring was completed in unfortunate fashion one minute later when Steve Sargison’s attempted cross took a wicked deflection off Josh Sharpe and crept into the corner of Bull’s net.
